Samaria gorge is the longest in Europe and one of the most impressive gorges in Greece. Follow the path through this famous gorge, marvel its natural landscape, from the White Mountains to thousand-year-old forests and the river across it.

At the end of the path, you will find the village of AgiaRoumeli, where people can swim, relax at the beach, or find a tavern to have lunch within full view of the Mediterranean Sea.

One of Greece's stunning gorges, Samaria Gorge is the longest in Europe, stretching about 16 kilometers (10 miles). It is located in the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in southwestern Crete, within the Samaria National Park. Explore the way through this well-known gorge and take in the breathtaking scenery, which includes the White Mountains, millennia-old trees, and a river that crosses it. The gorge is home to diverse flora and fauna, and it is a protected area. The hike usually starts at the Omalos Plateau, and it takes several hours to reach the village of Agia Roumeli at the end of the gorge.

At the end of the path, you will find the village of Agia Roumeli, a small coastal village, where people can swim, relax at the beach, or choose a taverna to eat lunch while admiring the Mediterranean Sea. The village has a pebble beach with crystal-clear waters, providing a serene environment for swimming and relaxation after the strenuous hike. The Libyan Sea in this area is known for its deep blue color and calm waters.

We provide pick-up from a variety of locations, including bus stops and hotels. We will get in touch with you as soon as you make the reservation to confirm the precise location and time of the pick-up, which will be closer to the hotel you are staying in.

If required, the excursion operator retains the right to rearrange the schedule in order to better accommodate guests or ensure their safety.

If ordered by the government COVID regulation, passengers must carry and wear face masks when traveling by bus and in indoor areas.

Full Description

Morning Pick up:

In the morning, we will begin collecting the passengers from the designated pick-up locations.

The bus ride will vary based on where your hotel or apartment is located.

Bus Drive to Omalos: approx. 3 hours

*There will be a short stop on the way for restroom and snack –  about 20 minutes

1st stop: The plateau of Omalos

We will make sure we have everything we need or pick up a few last items before heading into the gorge.

2nd Stop: Samaria Gorge – 4.5 – 5 hours

Visitors will be amazed during this incredible journey of the impressive gorge, through the breathtaking views of the surrounding White Mountains, the small river that flows through the gorge, and the kri-kri wild goats. It is 16 kilometers long and takes around 4 -5 hours to walk, depending on your pace.

3rd stop: Agia Roumeli settlement

Reach the isolated village of Agia Roumeli at the end of the gorge. This is where you can relax, enjoy a meal, take a refreshing dip in the Libyan Sea, and have some lunch at one of the local restaurants (lunch is not included in the price). The beach is a peaceful and scenic spot where you can unwind after a challenging hike.

We will later board the boat that will return us to Chora Sfakion so we may return to our resorts.

Boat trip: 1 hour

5th stop: Chora Sfakion

Arrival at the village, embarkation in the buses, and return to the resorts.

End of the tour – Arrival at resorts:

As soon as the Buses are filled with passengers, we will head back to the hotels where we met up with the people attending in the morning.

The bus ride for the return will vary based on the traffic and each person's pick-up location in the morning.

Return Bus Drive to Heraklion: 3 hours

*There will be a short stop on the way back for restroom and snack – 20 minutes

 

Samaria Gorge is a natural wonder that provides a rewarding and memorable experience for nature enthusiasts and hikers.

Here are some additional Tips:

  • Comfortable Hiking Gear:

Wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring a hat, and apply sunscreen, as the sun can be intense.  Individual Trekking Equipment is also suggested.

  • Ample Water and Snacks:

Carry sufficient water and snacks for the hike, especially if you plan to spend several hours on the trail.

  • Fitness Level:

Be prepared for a challenging hike, especially in the narrow sections of the gorge. Ensure you are physically fit for the journey.

  • Swimming Gear:

Pack a beach towel, swimwear, and any other beach essentials.

  • Camera:

Don't forget your camera to capture the stunning landscapes.

  • Passport:

It is advisable to carry some form of identification, such as a national ID card or a copy of your passport, as it may be requested in certain situations.
